BMW

Series (five door)

Whether on long straight stretches of road or tight bends, the BMW 1 Series always creates a stir. And an atmosphere of pure pleasure. Even when stationary its proportions leave no doubt: The BMW 1 Series is the only vehicle in its class with the characteristic BMW rear-wheel drive.

Its redesigned and enlarged front air inlets allow the engine to breathe deeply. The finishers of the double headlights are more contoured; the optional fog lights are now rectangular and even more distinctly shaped. The entire front mirrors the active and agile lines of the side, giving an impression of elegance and power thanks to the discreet refinements. The dominance of the horizontal lines also lends the rear a more dynamic appearance. The distinct flow of the rear apron continues the lateral lines of the side skirts and is in perfect harmony with the front spoiler.

The cockpit is dominated by broadly stretched lines and surfaces. The lower section of the instrument panel has been redesigned in the same colour as the interior. Stressing the horizontal arrangement of the interior, the new shape imparts a generous feeling of spaciousness. Soft radii and blended surfaces help to integrate the centre console with its controls for entertainment and air-conditioning functions harmoniously into the instrument panel. Functional detailed solutions such as the new glove compartment add the finishing touches to the overall harmonious concept.

To power your BMW 1 Series you have a choice of three four-cylinder petrol engines, or a torquey six-cylinder, or an economical diesel engine with a particle filter as standard.

When combined with the perfectly tuned 6-speed transmission you experience driving pleasure like never before. And provides you with another reason to spend more time behind the wheel. And to experience how a high level of driving comfort coupled with dynamic handling ensures that the BMW 1 Series delivers sublime driving pleasure. Founded on the optimal 50:50 axle load distribution. Added to by the optional BMW Active Steering (available on 120d and 130i Sport), which perfectly adapts steering transmission and steering power support to suit the driving speed. Meaning greater agility on bends and pinpoint directional stability at high speeds.

Engines have to move cars – but a BMW engine has to be able to move hearts as well. That means it must be free-revving, torquey and economical. With a maximum of refinement, because that’s the way to achieve maximum driving enjoyment. That’s what the M in BMW stands for. And for the effortless power development and silky-smooth running that characterises every one of our engines. That’s another thing about the inimitable experience of driving a BMW 1 Series that you’ll enjoy, every kilometre of the way.

BMW 130i. Even this six-cylinder in-line engine sets new manufacturing standards. An exceptional power-to-weight ratio is achieved through the extensive use of magnesium and aluminium. The engine offers spontaneous power delivery and high revving power, which only lets up at 7,000 rpm. From a three-litre capacity come a powerful 195kW (265 hp), accelerating the vehicle in only 6.1 seconds from 0 to 100km/h. It reaches maximum torque at 2,750 rpm, and the top speed is 250 km/h.

BMW 120i and 118i. These powerful four-cylinder engines deliver impressive dynamics. Take the BMW 120i: its 115 kW (156 hp) enables a top speed of 215 km/h and a maximum torque of 200 Nm at 3,600 rpm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 8.6 seconds. The free-revving 118i boasts 100 kW (136 hp) of power, accelerating to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds. And, if you want it to, up to a top speed of 208 km/h. Both four-cylinders come with Valvetronic and Double-VANOS. This advanced valve control technology serves a dual purpose: Valvetronic enhances performance and fuel economy, using infinitely variable valve lift control, while Double-VANOS ensures an ideal torque curve over the entire rev range.

BMW 116i: Likewise fitted with four cylinders and powered by a plentiful 85 kW (116 hp), with this engine version the BMW 1 Series really is a dynamic drive. All thanks to 85 kW (116 hp), 150 Nm at 4,300 rpm and a top speed of 200 km/h. Meanwhile, the double-VANOS variable camshaft control ensures a perfect torque curve every time. Even beyond the 10.9 seconds needed to take you from 0 to 100 km/h. Whichever engine version you opt for, crisp short-throw gears and six-speed transmissions guarantee that every drop of engine power is transferred onto the road.

You can rely on the BMW 1 Series in any situation. Our engineers made sure of this, by giving it a very stiff body. With powerful chassis and suspension control systems included as standard, Brake Force Display and a plethora of other engineering innovations, the BMW 1 Series offers a whole new level of safety. For example, on difficult roads, the special DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system recognises any tendency to skid and immediately takes appropriate remedial action, intervening in engine or brake management. This increases traction, making it easier to accelerate out of a bend or drive off from rest. Even in the event of a complete loss of tyre pressure, DSC and its DTC and ABS sub-systems remain fully functional. Such features make driving a pleasure – and your safe arrival certain.

The safety electronics of the BMW 1 Series react to serious situations with amazing speed. Crash sensors respond immediately, deploying the correct system at the right time and to exactly the right degree. All 1 Series models come with belt force tensioners and the airbag system comprising six airbags (driver and front passenger airbag, head airbags for front and rear and side airbags integrated in the front-seat backrests).

In an impact situation, the BMW 1 Series bodyshell proves to be unyielding. Special reinforcements in the front and sides of the body and around the occupant cell protect the driver and passengers effectively. The bumpers can completely absorb the forces of impacts at speeds below 4 km/h, leaving the body undamaged. The highly rigid bodyshell also serves to ensure the BMW 1 Series handles with razor-sharp precision and breathtaking agility.

Awarded 5 stars in the NCAP crash test.

The BMW Z4 Coupé is framed by classic sports-car proportions. The long bonnet surges forward into the headwind. Short overhangs and the rear-slung seating position express controlled aggression. Sheer excitement in form. Uniqueness in character. The Z4 Coupé is dynamic even at rest – when unleashed, its energy is relentless. Driven by a 3-litre six-cylinder in-line engine delivering 265 hp (195kW), this is a breathtaking power – a power ready to conquer the road.

No room for compromise.
The view from the cockpit. Your focus on the road. Every control within intuitive reach. You sit low in this classic sports-car cockpit; the Z4 Coupé fits like a glove. A glove with a single purpose – to seize the road. It will never leave your grasp. And nor will the pleasure it brings.

The world’s smoothest heartbeat.
The in-line layout of the six cylinders reduces vibration to near-zero – even as the engine spins right up to a thrilling 7000 rpm. Relish the 5.7 short seconds it takes for the 195 kW (265 hp) of power to catapult you from 0 to 100 km/h. The engine’s efficiency results from a roster of technological innovations. Among them is Valvetronic, which infinitely varies valve lift for rapid engine response. And the electric water pump, which is controlled according to the precise requirements of the engine – rather than rpm alone. The extensive use of aluminium and magnesium reduces weight and thus fuel consumption, as well as making the BMW Z4 more agile – for even more enjoyable performance and handling.

Let the road be your sparring partner.
In the BMW Z4 Coupé driving becomes a heady concoction of adrenaline, asphalt and sheer dynamism. That you also get from A to B is an added bonus. Sweep into a bend and you will immediately feel the quality of the chassis, its wide track, long wheelbase, low centre of gravity and low seating position coming together to create the intoxicating joy of nigh-on perfect handling. Naturally this poise is not limited to bends; you will savour the responsive handling and fast cornering afforded by the ideal 50:50 axle load distribution on any road. Rear wheel drive provides high levels of traction and steering precision. In the BMW Z4 Coupé, the exceptional torsional stiffness of the body allows for even more precise and agile handling. In potentially dangerous situations, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) comes to the aid of the driver, preventing the car from breaking out in the wet, for example. This system also features Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which allows for a greater degree of rear-axle slip and brings yet more enjoyment to dynamic driving.

As standard, the BMW Z4 Coupé is fitted with a precision six-speed manual gearbox. If you wish, you can choose the optional six-speed automatic that features steering-wheel mounted paddles for Formula 1-style gear changes. But whichever transmission you select, you can look forward to six speeds and one essential quality: sheer driving pleasure.

Undercover protection.
You will be surprised how much safety equipment the BMW Z4 Coupé packs beneath its elegant surfaces. When the airbags are activated, the starter cable is simultaneously separated from the battery, safety belts are pre-tensioned and the generator and fuel pump are shut down. From the perspective of active safety, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) provides the driver with invaluable support in the event of a critical situation. The system uses targeted engine management and brake system intervention to counteract understeer or oversteer as it develops, quickly stabilising the car. Further DSC safety functions include Brake Readiness, which reduces stopping distance under emergency braking. Dry Braking optimises brake response in wet conditions, while Fading Compensation maintains high braking performance even under extreme use. And so that safety does not come at the cost of comfort, Start-Off Assistance helps you pull away smoothly on hills. It’s hard not to admire cars that keep such remarkable talents so beautifully hidden.

The new BMW M3

With a vehicle as powerful and dynamic as this, styling is never an aim in itself. Form will always be driven by functional considerations. The expressive front is designed to accommodate the V8 high-rev engine. The muscular rear allows for the wider track and four tailpipes. Even the shape of the exterior mirrors adds to the overall aerodynamics. Only the interplay of all these measures ensures the desired effect: sports car performance that is ideally suited to everyday driving.

Driving pleasure starts in the driving seat. This is why the interior of the BMW M3 Coupé has been designed with the person sitting behind the M steering wheel in mind. The trademark dual M circular dials, the M design iDrive Controller, the ergonomically optimised M seat with memory function, the innovative carbon structure leather trim. All these features combine to create an ambience that is designed to make drivers feel good - and inspired to take control

The optimised aerodynamics in the BMW M3 Coupé ensures that down force is both cooled and increased at the same time. The left opening near the powerdome channels additional air to the intake air plenum. The M rear apron with diffuser ensures controlled airflow along the car’s underbody. And the M front air dam with integrated air inlets cools the engine. The result? Added downforce for added thrills.

Combining racing technology with everyday usability, the V8 high-rev engine is full of BMW M3 Coupé personality. Every component has been carefully optimised to result in this impressive set of figures: maximum output of up to 8,400 rpm, 420 bhp and top torque of 400 Nm at 3,900 rpm. And that's not all, individual throttle butterflies, normally only found in race cars, allow for faster response and additional performance benefits - an absolute engineering highlight for a road car engine.

The BMW M3 Coupé offers ultra-fast, ultra-precise shifts every time. Its 6-speed manual gearbox ensures optimum transmission of engine power throughout the rev range, resulting in smooth acceleration on demand. Even downshifts are a pleasure - especially when followed by a bend. A redesigned, more lightweight, ventilated clutch makes for improved heat dissipation.

The DSC system prevents loss of roadholding in extreme situations. When activated, it stops the vehicle from veering off track by applying the brakes to those wheels which keep it on course. Together with the M Dynamic mode, DSC gives your sports ambitions free rein as drive slip for both longitudinal and transverse dynamics increases at all speed levels. And the optional Electronic Damper Control system, with three different settings, is perfectly matched to the BMW M3 Coupé to provide an unbridled driving experience.

A little extra traction can make all the difference, and the torque-sensitive, variable M differential lock identifies exactly when traction is needed. Even when wheel grip varies enormously, such as on bends taken at high speed, roadholding remains excellent as the locking power between the left and right rear wheels can be raised to 100%. Drivers who expect the most from their cars know what this feature delivers: it optimises handling, improves safety and enhances the thrust provided by the BMW M3 Coupé's rear-wheel drive.

Sports-style driving requires exceptional safety. Of central importance in the BMW M3 Coupé's comprehensive protection package: driver, front passenger, side and head airbags. All airbags are controlled by the perfectly calibrated safety electronics system - this intelligent coordinator ensures that each bag is inflated to the correct degree to minimise the effects of an impact. The same system can also activate the seatbelt tensioners, deactivate the central locking or cut the fuel pump's activity.
