A quirky UMPC, halfway between a full-blown laptop and the Origami concept.
Microsoft’s ultraportable ‘Origami’ concept copped a lot of flak when it was announced. We like the idea, but we’ve yet to see the usability hurdles the devices will have to overcome properly addressed.Sony's VGN-UX17GP is the first ultraportable to come through our labs. It looks very cool and is really just a 15x10cm laptop with matching amounts of grunt, which is useful because unlike a PDA it isn’t task specific and will run almost anything you throw at it.

Although the screen is touch sensitive, this Vaio comes pre-loaded with Windows XP Pro, not Tablet Edition. This also means it’s not an Origami device, just an indication of the form factor we should expect to see in the future. Unfortunately this almost completely sidelines the functionality of the stylus, although you can tap the screen like a mouse and scribble notes into Sony's proprietary software. The stunningly detailed 1024x600 screen, which is the size of a PDA, is easily the sharpest handheld LCD we’ve seen.

It's powered by a 1.2GHz Core Solo, 512 MB of RAM, a 30GB HDD, Intel 945 onboard graphics, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g. If you’re not doing anything intensive, you get two and half-odd hours of battery life thanks to processor throttling and the relatively low specifications of the unit. If you’re flogging it, expect one and a half hours.

The unit itself has one USB port, Compact Flash and Memory Stick Duo card readers, two cameras, a fingerprint scanner and headphone and microphone ports. Using a dongle, you can connect to a wired network as well as getting VGA and TV out; and if you dock it in the included cradle you get these and an additional three USB and Mini-FireWire port.

Instead of taking a cue from its own PSP and placing the mouse on the left, the small track point is nestled under your right thumb. The buttons are under your left thumb, instead of the underside of the unit, which is we would have preferred them. The touch screen provides a little relief, but finger accuracy doesn’t cut it on a screen of this resolution, so common tasks become a stylus-fiddling chore.

We're a little disappointed that there's no inbuilt GPS or mobile phone functionality. Ultraportables will need these if they're going to compete with high end mobile phones, because if you can’t find a killer app to suit you in this incarnation all they will do is turn heads when you use them. This is all well and good, but once the novelty wears off (which it will unless you're a midget who can write "this keyboard is too small" on a grain of rice) you may find it’s impossible to do anything productive on it at speed.

In short, you run the risk of your brand spankin’ new laptop turning into an expensive portable hard drive, video player and A2DP audio streamer unless you already have a purpose in mind for it. We’ll let you know how the Origami devices are shaping up on the usability front when we see them.

Belakangan ini koran-koran dibanjiri iklan penjualan laptop murah. Dari raja-raja laptop seperti Toshiba, IBM alias Lenovo, HP, Acer, sampai para pendatang baru seperti ECS, A Note, dan Benq, semua pasang advertensi. Dengan uang Rp 5 jutaan, siapa pun bisa bawa pulang laptop keren dan gaya.

Dari belasan merek dan jenis laptop yang bertebaran itu kira-kira mana yang cocok untuk Anda?

Berikut ini sebagian faktor yang perlu dipertimbangkan dalam memilih laptop. Ini hasil pikiran dummy for dummies, hehehe … Siapa tahu berguna.

1. Tentukan batas kisaran harga

Menurut para konsultan finansial sebaiknya kita membeli berdasarkan KEBUTUHAN bukan KEINGINAN bukan pula GENGSI. (gengsi aja kok nggak boleh)

2. Aplikasi apa yang sering dipakai:

• Kalau cuma buat ngetik, bikin presentasi powerpoint, excel, internetan, sesekali photoshop kelas Intel Celeron atau AMD Sempron pun sudah cukup. Bahkan banyak sudah dilengkapi akses Wifi. Tak perlu beli laptop dg prosesor Centrino yg mahal. Celeron/Sempron pun kuat buat Photosop-an, Corel Draw, bahkan juga QuarkExpress (desain utk bikin koran seperti yang dipakai Koran Tempo)–sudah dites di rumah. Kalau mau lebih bertenaga dg laptop murah, upgrade sendiri memori atau RAM dari 256 MB –> 512 MB. Karena Windows XP itu seperti Linux kalau dipasang di komputer bermemori 256 MB memang kurang greng
• Kalau buat yg suka ngoprek program komputer, desain grafis yang berat, memang lebih enak pake prosesor kelas atas seperti Core 2, AMD Turion. Centrino atau Core Solo biasa pun sebenarnya juga sudah lumayan lah.
• Dan ingat laptop-laptop prosesor Core Duo itu saat ini pun tidak bisa running 100 persen seperti yang diinginkan produsennya. Karena, prosesor Core 2 menuntut software baru yang cocok untuk “otaknya”. Dan sekarang ini software itu masih sedikiiiiit sekali. Baru Windows Vista doang (itu pun baru dilaunch). Jadi, aspek kecepatan yang diharapkan dari kerja laptop Core 2 ini ya.. ndak terlalu dramatik..

3. Seberapa mobile Anda

• Semakin mobile pilih yang kecil dan ringan. Rata-rata laptop beratnya 2,3-2,5 kg. Laptop ini buat ngeliput kerusuhan seperti di Tasikmalaya (Beberapa tahun silam) atau Poso–artinya dibawa di ransel jalan keliling kota lebih dari 2 jam–bikin pundak pegelnya lumayan. Idealnya sih buat wartawan cari yg enteng di bawah 2 kg cuma mahal. Namun, kalau dipake kerjanya cuma di kantor atau 1-2 bulan sekali kerja di kafe sih berat 2,3-2,5 kg sih masih oke.
• Semakin mobile pilih baterai yang tahan lama. Rata-rata laptop sih baterainya 2,5 - 3 jam. Yang ultra low voltage seperti keluaran Fujitsu, Sony Vaio, Toshiba Portege bisa 4-7 jam.
• Bagi pengguna yang bukan high frequent flyer kelas baterai yg 2,5-3 jam pun sudah cukup. (Emang seberapa kuat sih kita kerja di kafe seperti Starbucks? mendingan ngelihatin tamu kafe atau baristanya kan daripada kerja, hehehe)

4. Layar

• Yang suka kecil tentu saja pilih layar 8, 10, 11 atau 12 inchi –> sayangnya yg kecil ini biasanya lebih mahal
• Yang sedang-sedang sih 13 atau 14 inchi. Yang 15 inchi biasanya lebih murah lagi. Ingin lebar tapi nggak pingin kelihatan gede pilih yang wide screen. Layar 13 wide sreen lumayan, tak terlalu kecil atau gede.
• Yang buat desain ya enaknya 17 inchi

5. Yang perlu diingat pula laptop yang sudah kita beli itu cenderung harganya terjun bebas.

Dalam 2 tahun laptop bekas itu bisa turun harganya 2-4 juta. Jadi kalau beli mahal-mahal pertimbangkan pula penyusutan nilai yg gila-gilaan.

Kalau saya sih lebih suka membeli laptop yang tak terlalu canggih mengingat toh harganya 2-4 tahun akan drop habis-habisan dan menjual kembali laptop itu tak gampang. Pilih teknologi medium, dengan harga menengah mungkin salah satu alternatif yang patut dipertimbangkan karena dari sisi teknologi tak ketinggalan amat, dari harga juga ngga nguras kantong banget.

6. Reputasi merek

• IBM (sekarang Lenovo) — desain kaku (tipe yg terakhir aja agak manis seperti Z61), tapi kuat dan bandel, ukuran keyboard paling pas di tangan
• Acer — merek taiwan desain manis, klaim nya sih nomor satu di Eropa tahun 2006
• Toshiba — pernah bertahun-tahun jadi laptop no 1 di dunia dan di Indonesia, lumayan bandel
• ECS — merek Taiwan , katanya sih ok tanya Prabandari (Kabiro Tempo di bandung, dia beli ECS yang tablet PC yg bentuknya spt buku agenda dari tahun 2005), purnajual katanya juga oke
• Dell –keren untuk tipe yang Inspiron seperti punya mas Wawan (Teknologi)
• Sony Vaio — Hfff… desain yang tipe TX kereeen banget kecil dan imut-imut. Sayang harganya masih di 18-20 juta.
• Hp/Compaq — Malangnya aku tak pernah suka desainnya
• Fujitsu — yang tipe kecilnya keren.. walau tak selucu Vaio
• Powerbook — cool and different, tipis, tapi berat dan tak cocok bagi pengoprek komputer karena sistem operasinya Macintosh.

Faktor lainnya sih cuma asesoris seperti koneksi bluetooth, infra merah, pengaman dg sidik jari, pembaca kartu SD. Semuanya bisa jadi pertimbangan minor.

Ya, ini uneg-uneg pemburu dan penggemar laptop bekas hehehehe, boleh didengar boleh juga tidak. Jadi, selanjutnya terserah Anda.

US court denies Dish patent appeal

SAN JOSE, Calif. - A federal appeals court said Friday it won't reconsider a ruling favoring TiVo Inc. in its patent dispute with Dish Network Corp.

The decision puts TiVo closer to receiving the $94 million a lower court awarded the Alviso, Calif.-based digital video recorder maker for Dish Network's patent infringement. It also sets an important legal precedent that gives TiVo leverage as it negotiates partnerships with other satellite and cable TV providers who want to use DVR technology.

In January, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit agreed with a lower court that DVRs distributed by Dish, formerly known as EchoStar Communications Corp., violated the software elements of TiVo's patent. The ruling overturned the lower court's finding that Dish also infringed on the patent's hardware elements.

Dish last month asked the Washington-based appeals court to rehear the case, saying the court's ruling relied on inaccurate testimony from a TiVo witness. But the court Friday declined to reconsider its decision.

Dish Network said it would file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court.

TiVo issued a statement Friday saying it was "extremely pleased" with the court's action.

"Today's ruling brings us closer to resolution of EchoStar's infringement and reconfirms the strength of TiVo's Time Warp patent," the statement said.

Dish Network issued a statement saying the ruling was disappointing, but would not affect its customers because the company had developed and distributed new DVR software that "does not infringe the Tivo patent at issue in the Federal Circuit's ruling."

Dish's shares dropped 81 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $30.82 Friday. Tivo rose 13 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $8.91.

China Mobile seeking small stakes in global peers

BEIJING (Reuters) - China Mobile, the world's largest mobile phone operator, said on Saturday that it was seeking small stakes in global telecom firms because controlling stakes had become too expensive.

Although minor holdings would give China Mobile only limited sway over target companies, Chief Executive Wang Jianzhou said there would be wider benefits from such deals.

"Entering into international telecom firms as small shareholders can help us learn from their experiences and gradually develop further," he told a seminar on the sideline of the Boao Forum for Asia in southern China.

China Mobile Ltd. (0941.HK) last year bought an 89 percent stake in money-losing operator Paktel Ltd. for $284 million, its first acquisition outside its home market.

Wang said many telecom firms were looking at a small pool of targets in emerging markets, which was greatly driving up acquisition prices.

"It's not realistic for us to try to always get controlling stakes at very high prices," he added, without revealing which markets he was interested in.

Discussing delays in bringing Apple's (AAPL.O) iPhone to China, Wang said China Mobile was very interested in doing so because many of its customers were hungry for the phone.

The mobile operator said in January that talks with Apple Inc (AAPL.O) on launching the U.S. company's popular iPhones in China had been called off, although Apple has never commented officially on the issue.

"The door is always open and as long as our clients like it, we will actively push for it," he said.

Wang added that the two sides had reached a consensus on some manner of cooperation but had yet to discuss a range of technical issues. He did not elaborate.

He also said that China Mobile, which is listed only on the Hong Kong market, had not dropped its aim of floating a small batch of shares in Shanghai at some point despite the turbulent market conditions.

Dell Inspiron 1525 Review

The old days of bulky, overweight Dell notebooks may be coming to a close in 2008. Today Dell announced their latest addition to the Inspiron family of notebooks, the 15.4-inch Inspiron 1525. We are happy to have a pre-production unit to review, and this sleek successor to the Inspiron 1520 might just surprise you.

Our pre-production Inspiron 1525 is equipped with the following specs:

Build and Design

Dell received some much needed attention in 2007 with the introduction of the sleek, high performance XPS M1330 and XPS M1530 notebooks. Although these more expensive notebooks in the Dell lineup were praised for their looks and low weight, the Dell Inspiron 1520 was criticized for being yet another bulky and unattractive laptop. Dell listened closely to this criticism when they designed the new Inspiron 1525. The Inspiron 1525 is in fact 25% smaller, 30% slimmer and almost half a pound lighter than the Inspiron 1520.

In addition to the eight color options available on other Inspiron notebooks, the 1525 offers four new patterns. These designs are inlaid molds so there's no risk of the design coming off.

Although I wasn't a huge fan of the glossy inlaid "Commotion Pattern" design on our pre-production Inspiron 1525, I must say it looks flawless. I was highly critical of the paint application on the Inspiron 1420, 1520, and 1720 because the paint has questionable durability. The new glossy lid designs might be a magnet for fingerprints, but it certainly looks more durable than the old Inspiron paint jobs.

Screen

Display options for the Inspiron 1525 include a matte finish 15.4" Widescreen XGA (1280 x 800), a 15.4" Widescreen XGA (1280 x 800) with TruleLife (glossy finish), or a 15.4" "high resolution" (1440 x 900) glossy widescreen display. On the surface the lack of higher resolutions is a serious flaw in the design of the 1525. In truth, the overwhelming majority of "average" notebook users will think the WXGA resolution looks stunning.

The screen on our pre-production unit looks flawless from straight on and the horizontal viewing angles are great. Upper vertical viewing angles are good, but colors did begin to invert at lower viewing angles when the screen is tilted back.

Keyboard, Touchpad and Media Controls

The keyboard on the Inspiron 1525 is fairly similar to the 1520. The keyboard is firm with virtually no flex and the keys have excellent travel and cushion.

The touchpad surface utilizes the new design that is integrated with the palm rest surface. The only separation between the palm rests and the touchpad is the indented area above the touchpad buttons. The touchpad buttons have excellent travel and cushion, though I did feel like they made a bit too much of a "clicking" sound when pressed. The good news with the touchpad is that it's responsive, has dedicated scroll areas and the textured feel is good.

A series of touch-sensitive media buttons with blue LED backlights are located above the keyboard similar to the buttons on the XPS notebooks. One nice feature about the media buttons is that the blue LEDs only stay lit for a fraction of a second after being pressed, so they won't distract you by staying lit all the time. Another "interesting" feature of the media buttons is that the blue LEDs "pulse" back and forth for a few seconds during Windows startup not unlike KITT from the old Knight Rider TV series or a cylon from Battlestar Galactica.

Speakers

The speaker quality was "acceptable" for a notebook without a built-in subwoofer. The speakers for the 1525 are located at the top of the keyboard area above the media buttons.

There's not much to write home about the speakers, they get loud enough with minimal distortion, but the sound is slightly tinny as is the case with nearly all laptop speakers. Just imagine listening to music from small speakers mounted inside a tin can and you'll have an idea about the built-in sound quality. On the brighter side, both audio out ports delivered crystal clear audio to my earbuds during the test period.

Performance and Benchmarks

One thing to notice is that the dedicated graphics card option available on the Inspiron 1520 is missing from the Inspiron 1525. The reasoning behind this is that Dell is pushing the XPS M1530 as the 15.4" notebook for those demanding higher-end graphics performance. The Inspiron 1525 is meant for a more mainstream buyer looking for good multimedia and productivity features from a notebook, and not cutting edge 3D performance.

Regardless, I would have liked for Dell to offer at least an entry-level nVidia 8400 GS 128MB dedicated graphics card option on the 1525. Sure, it might compete with a base configuration XPS M1530, but consumers like to have choices.

That being said, the Inspiron 1525 performed quite well during testing and this machine will meet or exceed the performance needs of most average (non-gaming) users.

wPrime is a program that forces the processor to do recursive mathematical calculations, the advantage of this program is that it is multi-threaded and can use both processor cores at once, thereby giving more accurate benchmarking measurements than Super Pi.
